IOMMU as a DefenseThe IOMMU (Intel VT-d, AMD-Vi) is a hardware unit that translates DMA addresses from PCIe devices using a device-specific page table (analogous to the CPU’s page tables for usermode address translation). If the IOMMU is enabled and properly configured, a PCIe device can only access physical memory that the OS has explicitly granted to it via the IOMMU page tables.
